Biography

Robert Gao is the Cady Staley Professor of Engineering and Chair, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, at Case Western Reserve University. He previously served as Pratt & Whitney Endowed Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. Since receiving his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany in 1991, he has been working in the areas of physics-based sensing methods, smart structures and materials, energy harvesting, multi-resolution signal analysis, wireless communication, and energy-efficient sensor networks. He has published two authored and edited books and over 290 scientific papers in archival journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, graduated over 30 Ph.D. and M.S. students, and holds 4 patents. He is a recipient of multiple awards, including the Technical Award from the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (2013), Outstanding Associated Editor Award from the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (2012), Best Paper Award from the International Symposium on Flexible Automation (2012), etc. Professor Gaois currently an Associate Editor for the IFAC Journal of Mechatronics and ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering. He was an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and ASME, an elected Associated Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and an electedMember of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE).
